Socially inclined angel investment network – Impact Circle invested in Sudiksha Knowledge Solutions Pvt. Ltd., an operator of Bottom of Pyramid (BoP) schools with focus on quality education at an affordable rate.

The amount of funds deployed remains undisclosed along with the mode of investment.

Impact Circle was recently formed and comprises of wealthy individuals that have joined hands to come up with a specialized network of angel investors who will support social ventures.

Currently having around 15 investors, the network has backing from institutional investors such as Ennovent, Swiss firm Rianta Capital, and the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation and it aims to provide seed capital in the range of $25,000 to $1 Mn (R14 lakh to R5.5 Cr) to very young social ventures.

Director Digbijoy Shukla stated the expectation of returns from such investments to be in the range of 10-12%.

It plans to peak out its membership at around 50 by early 2014.

Food, energy, healthcare, water and education are the main sectors being targeted by the social investing network and it expects to close two more deals in the healthcare and agricultural information space at the start of 2013.

Sudiksha was founded in 2010 by Naveen Kumar and Nimisha Mittal and claims to have made a difference in the lives of about 800 low-income group families through education disposal.

Sudiksha runs 18 schools in Andhra Pradesh, 12 in Hyderabad and 6 in rural Andhra Pradesh. 12 of its schools in Hyderabad are managed by women entrepreneurs.

The social investing space has been witnessing growing interests from investors recently. This month the Patni brothers (Amit and Arihant) acquired around 43% stake in social investment bank – Grameen Capital India.

Bigger player, Motilal Oswal PE was also planning to launch India focused Impact Investment Fund with a corpus of R250 – 300 Cr for investment in socially relevant businesses.
