Sundaram Rajagopal Rejoins Starwood Capital As MD, India and Southeast Asia

Sundaram V Rajagopal is rejoining Starwood Capital Group as its Managing Director, India and Southeast Asia, Starwood Capital India Advisors Private Limited.

Rajagopal previously worked at Starwood Capital from 2002-2005, where he served as a Vice President and focused on transaction execution for a variety of asset classes in US and Europe.

In his current role, Rajagopal will lead all acquisition and asset management activities for Starwood Capital in India and Southeast Asia and will manage the team based in Mumbai, India. He has 17 years of real estate experience, including nearly 10 years of executing real estate investments in India.

Rajagopal most recently served as Managing Director and Country Head for Lehman Brothers 'Real Estate Partners' activities in India, where he developed and executed Lehman's entry into real estate private equity in India and invested approximately $300 Mn across ventures and asset classes.

Prior to joining Lehman Brothers in 2006, he was Managing Partner for Third Point India, LLC, a partnership dedicated to real estate, and other special situation investments in India. He joined Third Point India from Starwood Capital Group.

Before Starwood, he served as MD of Sundaram Architects Pvt Ltd in Bangalore, where he was responsible for the design and management of over 30 building and infrastructure projects.

Rajagopal holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, an M.S. in Structural Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley and an M.B.A. with distinction from Harvard Business School.

He will be replacing Balaji Rao, the current MD of Starwood Capital India, who is leaving the firm to pursue other interests and has agreed to continue working with Starwood Capital during the interim period to transition his responsibilites to Mr Rajagopal.

Starwood Capital is a private, U.S-based investment firm with focus on global real estate that invests in various classes of real estate including office, retail, residential, senior housing, golf, hotels, resorts and industrial assets and currently has $14 Bn of AUM.

Starwood Capital's Mumbai office was opened in 2006 and has investments including a landmark office project in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla district currently under consturction and has also invested in a $1.25 Bn integrated township in Kolkata along with Walton Street Capital and Shriram Properties.
