Gaurav Gupta is joining Macquarie Capital Advisors India to head the investment banking division for India. He will replace Varun Bajpai, who has been appointed as the CEO of SBI Macquarie Infrastructure Management, a JV between SBI and Macquarie Capital.

Gaurav will be based in Mumbai and will report to Kalpana Desai, who joined Macquarie Capital Advisors in September as the deputy head of Asia.

Gaurav Gupta worked in Nomura as the head of telecommunications, media and financial services for India. Before joining Nomura, Gupta was at NM Rothschild between 2002 and 2007. He brings 12 years of investment banking and transaction advisory experience and has led both domestic and cross border transactions across multiple sectors including real estate, telecommunications and media.

In India, Macquarie has a presence across corporate finance and advisory, infrastructure funds management, cash equities sales and research, and private wealth management. It employs more than 100 people in its advisory and cash equities business based in Mumbai, with the headcount split roughly equal between the two businesses.

Nomura also recently appointed Nitin Jain from ICICI as co-head of fixed income department. It has also hired Nipun Goel from Merrill Lynch India to head investment banking.
